Discussion over damage to Ellis Park

The Dunedin City Council remains tight-lipped over progress towards settling the costs with a Christchurch developer, relating to flood damage to Ellis Park.

Council resource consents manager Alan Worthington would only say "amicable discussions" were continuing with the developer, Dennis Thomson, following last month's flooding.

Council staff earlier this month blamed a muddy torrent washing down from Mr Thomson's 20-lot subdivision development for damage to nearby Ellis Park on May 27.

It was estimated the damage would cost the council $15,000 to repair.

Council staff were to meet Mr Thomson on June 11 to discuss matters, including compensation.

Contacted this week, Mr Worthington confirmed the meeting had taken place but would not elaborate.

"We met with him and are just carrying on working on that one.

"There's not much to say at this point. The process hasn't been finished."

Council community and recreation services manager Mick Reece, who detailed damage to the park and the council's efforts to seek compensation, said he was not involved in meetings with Mr Thomson.

Mr Thomson has not accepted responsibility for the damage, telling the ODT earlier this month water had entered his development from surrounding properties, and the flooding may have been "an act of God".
