The last major fundraiser for the Regent Theatre's redevelopment fund was a "huge success" that will have pushed the fund significantly closer to its $2 million target, Otago Theatre Trust chairman Mike Shield says.

Mr Shield said 170 people attended a wine auction gala night at the Regent Theatre on Saturday.

Rare and valuable bottles of wine, original art works, weekend escapes, and more were auctioned off amid what he described as a "tremendous" spirit.

The wine and alcohol items were particularly popular, with one bottle of whisky going for $800 and another pair of bottles of Wilson whisky sold for $1500.

Organisers of the evening had not tallied up the proceeds last night, but Mr Shield expected it to be a high figure.

As at Thursday, The Star's "Help Save The Regent" fundraising campaign stood at $1,953,000.

The trust is also awaiting decisions on several applications for grants.
