When it comes to dilemmas, Mike Carrodus reckons his isn't a bad one to have.

What do you buy with one million Fly Buys points? It was something Mr Carrodus (41) was left to ponder this week when he became a fly buys "millionaire" after winning a nationwide promotion through Shell service stations.

The winning purchase was made at Shell Mosgiel.

He learned of his success on Thursday, and admitted it was "hard to believe".

Then he and his family began scouring the Fly Buys website.

Shell officials would not put a cash figure on the points, but it is understood they could be worth up to $200,000 in prizes.

"I'm pretty happy with that," he said.

While most would have no difficulty spending the points, Mr Carrodus' task had been made more difficult by the fact they recently moved into a new home in Wingatui which is already decked out with new appliances.

"We don't need anything for the home. We might go on a family holiday to Australia this year and maybe Disneyland next year. I'll let the kids decide.

"I guess if you've got a dilemma, it's not a bad one to have."

Mr Carrodus is eyeing a new four-wheel drive work ute, but says he will talk with his wife, Louise, and four children (aged 19 to 11) before deciding what else to get.

The points are valid for three years.

Mr Carrodus, who works as a possum monitor contracted to the Animal Health Board, spends up to $10,000 on diesel each year.

He always buys his fuel through Shell, so reckons the win was not a bad payback.
