Detour after motorist hits power pole

A sleepy driver has caused two nights of detours for Mosgiel commuters.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand and St John staff were called to Gladfield Rd, near the Gladfield Country Golf Club, about 4.45pm on Tuesday.

A 38-year-old man driving home from work in Milton appeared to have fallen asleep, driving off the road, he said.

The collision caused the power pole to snap and the road was blocked for several hours while contractors did repairs, Snr Sgt Bond said.

A Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said Riverside Rd was used as an alternative detour after the crash and was removed early yesterday morning.

Crews returned to the site last night to complete repairs to an overhead conductor that could not have been completed on the night of the incident.

The secondary detour was put in place from 6pm yesterday, and would be in place until the contractor had rectified the issue, the spokeswoman said.
