Oliver Picken (14), of Auckland,  ponders his next move at the South Island Rapid Chess Championship in Dunedin yesterday. 

Oliver shared the trophy with Iain Lamont, of Dunedin, Edward Rains, of Christchurch and Vyanla Punsalan, of New Plymouth.

Event spokesman Quentin Johnson said competition was tight.

Twenty-one people entered the day-long competition in which games were played for a maximum of one hour.
