Dunedin mayoral hopeful Lee Vandervis has hit out at the individuals responsible for damaging election hoardings around the city, saying the vandalism is a mark of the moronic perpetrator rather than any issues with the candidates.

Hoardings for 13 candidates for the Dunedin City Council or Otago Regional Council were mowed down in Balmacewen Rd  on Saturday night.

Mr Vandervis said it was only the latest in a string of attacks on election hoardings.

Signs in Stevenson Rd had been targeted at least twice, signs in Abbotsford,  and Mr Vandervis’ sign at the intersection of Larnach Rd and Marne St  was singled out for attention.

Four-wheel-drive tyre marks were visible at the site of the Balmacewen Rd vandalism and had also shown up at some of the other attacks.

"There’s been a concerted effort on the part of one individual, I would suggest," Mr Vandervis said.

"They have been busy boys."

Such efforts were "pretty disappointing", he said.

"It’s a sign of the intelligence of your detractors," he said.

"I’m surprised they have enough to hold a driver’s licence.

"I just hope this moron is stupid enough to go for the one of mine that’s in the water [at Andersons Bay inlet]."

The signs  cost of $30 each, but he would continue to replace them as long as he had signs available.

Otago Regional Council Dunedin constituency candidate Dave Yardley’s was the only sign hit in Balmacewen Rd to be re-erected by yesterday afternoon, albeit with a muddy tyre track  across it.

The sign had only been up since Saturday, he said.

A friend had repaired it, but Mr Yardley, too, was the victim of further vandalism as a sign in the central city had been vandalised.

Neither man had complained to police and a police spokeswoman said no complaints about the Balmacewen Rd vandalism had been reported.

Mr Vandervis’ hoardings were displayed on steel waratahs, which had damaged the vandal’s four-wheel drive.

"I have got part of his grille," he said.

"If the police are interested, I do have bits of the four-wheel-drive I have kept."

Vandals just take handles. These people ram structures. Drivers like this are monomaniacal and dangerous. Motorised, of course. This rap can't be pinned on cyclists.
