Three Waters delivery up for discussion

The Dunedin City Council says it can afford to keep its Three Waters department if that is what residents want.

Or it could switch to having services delivered by a council-owned company if this approach is favoured instead.

The council has proposed to keep delivery of water as an in-house service.

It is seeking public feedback about this, as well as the alternative option of setting up a company to provide the service.

"Under both models, the amount you pay for water services will rise," the council said in consultation material approved yesterday.

"The cost could perhaps even double over the next nine years no matter which model we go with."

However, the council asserted it was at least in a position where it could make a choice.

"We have invested in our people and processes, and we have proactively set up our contracts to allow for the delivery of water services in ways that would work under either model.

"Over the past four years, the DCC has become one of the few councils that can deliver on its planned work programme.

"We are in the fortunate position where we don’t have to change from our current model (in-house), but we could choose to."
