Trial roundabouts for hazardous intersections

Trial roundabouts are being installed at two busy intersections in Dunedin.

The roundabouts - at the intersection of Teviot and Timaru Sts in South Dunedin and at the intersection of Jubilee St and Hawthorne Ave in Mornington  - are expected to reduce problems with traffic speeds and crashes.

There were eight crashes from 2017 to 2021 at the Mornington intersection where the trial will take place. Two of them were serious.

There were three crashes during the same time period at the South Dunedin intersection.

Parking on the corners of that intersection had proven to be a traffic hazard, Dunedin City Council transport group manager Jeanine Benson said.

The roundabout would assist control of traffic going to and from the supermarket and garden centre there.

Ms Benson said the roundabouts were a simple way to slow all traffic coming into the intersections and would be safer for drivers and pedestrians.

The roundabouts would have raised rubber circles in the centre and could be mounted by vehicles, if necessary.

They will be installed from July.

The council is asking for feedback about the roundabouts, until July 29.

Permanent designs would then be confirmed.
