Man blasts DCC after spray efforts fall short

A man who complained about the spread of moss on Dunedin footpaths says contractors did a quick spray and walk away — leaving most of the problem untouched.

Newspaper delivery man and Bellona St resident Matt Smits (76) previously complained to the council about lichen and moss on the footpaths in Bird and De Carle Sts, St Kilda.

In response to his complaint the council sent a contractor to water blast a small portion of the footpath but it did not fix the problem, Mr Smits said.

"Across the road you can see how mossy it is and they didn’t even bother going across the road.

"I’m not the one doing their job, I just know they’re not doing it well."

He said better coverage of the area was needed because the streets were still unsafe.

"It hasn’t made the street safer to walk around in because they’ve just done that little bit and its not going to last all that damn long because it’s not as if it’s totally done.

"I think they should water blast it properly and they must be something out there like a spray or something so it doesn’t happen again."

Mr Smits said the problem was pretty widespread in St Kilda and about 30% to 40% of the footpaths were covered in moss.

He said there were also problems including some holes in footpaths and bushes with overhanging trees that people could hit their heads on in the area.

A council spokesman said its contractors carried out a wide range of routine maintenance in all parts of Dunedin year-round including regularly waterblasting footpaths with moss growth caused by winter shade at this time of year.

Their work included spraying in spring and summer to control weeds and other vegetation, which covered the entire street network two and a-half times during that period, he said.

"We also respond to callouts — including for moss removal — during winter months which are prioritised and dealt with on a case-by-case basis, and we continue to invest in footpath renewals across the city."
