The Labour Party is endorsing two candidates for the Dunedin City Council at this year’s election.

They are incumbent councillor Steve Walker and Mosgiel Taieri Community Board chairwoman Joy Davis.

The involvement of political parties in local democracy has not always been welcomed, but is again set to be a factor on the campaign trail.

The Green Party has yet to publicly confirm its team, but it has endorsed Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins, who is seeking re-election.

A group ticket called Team Dunedin is being led by Cr Jules Radich and its line-up has yet to be selected.

Labour Party candidate selection panel chairwoman Ruth Chapman said it was important for candidates endorsed by the party to demonstrate its core principles and values.

The party did not exert pressure on candidates to take particular positions while on the council, she said.

Cr Walker is a former West Harbour Community Board chairman and he was endorsed by Labour in the 2019 election, alongside Marian Hobbs for the Otago Regional Council.

Ms Davis is Otago Neighbourhood Support regional co-ordinator and has been involved in school boards and emergency response groups.

She was the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board deputy chairwoman in the previous term and its chairwoman during this term.

So can the two candidates please state who they are representing on the council? the labour party or the people of Dunedin? why are political parties trying to run a city?
