The site of a planned trial roundabout in Dunedin's George St has had a series of crashes in recent years.

The intersection in North Dunedin where Park St, Regent Rd and St David St meet George St had 15 crashes between 2018 and last year - one of them serious.

A trial roundabout is to be installed there, one of four to be introduced in Dunedin this month, subject to weather-related delays.

A new temporary roundabout in South Dunedin is to be at the intersection of Teviot St and Timaru St and in Mornington temporary roundabouts will be at the intersection of Mailer and Lawrence Sts, and at the intersection of Hawthorn Ave and Jubilee St.

Roundabouts could provide safety benefits for all road users and improve traffic flow at confusing intersections, a Dunedin City Council spokeswoman said.

The George St intersection outside the Regent Night ’n Day was a five-way intersection, Dunedin had a lot of four-way intersections and there was sometimes confusion among drivers about who had right of way, she said.

"Roundabouts are much simpler to establish who has the priority and are proven to reduce the severity of crashes for that reason, as well as the reduced speeds of vehicles.

"At intersections where the right turn out of a side road is very difficult, roundabouts enable that turn to be made safely, especially at peak times."

Drivers took risks if they felt they had been waiting too long, and tried to pull into traffic, she said.

Trial roundabouts were inexpensive, quick to implement and caused little disruption to traffic.

"Under the trial, evaluation of the site and the effects on the surrounding network can be assessed and when it comes time to decide on the permanent version, users have a better understanding of how the intersection can function because of the experience gained in using the trial layout."
