Traffic signal work involving the relocation of signal poles and changing the controller/rewiring and new red arrows, at Stuart St will take about a week.
NZ Transport Agency Dunedin State Highway 1 cycle lanes senior project manager Simon Underwood said the footpath width was being reduced to accommodate the cycle lane.
The traffic signals were being relocated to match.
Much of this work was focused on protecting pedestrians from turning traffic by adding red arrows.
This meant pedestrians would ''get a safe space to cross Stuart St and traffic turning off Cumberland, left or right, will get a red arrow to enable that to happen'', Mr Underwood said.

''We are retaining the parking in this block by building two parking bays, catering for multiple vehicles.''
Back-filling the kerb and the footpath edge there would be undertaken this week and pavement milling would take place next week.
Some footpath resurfacing could also follow, he said.
