Councils sign water MoU

Collaboration with Christchurch to share delivery of some water services is a step closer for the Dunedin City Council (DCC) after Dunedin’s councillors agreed the idea should be investigated.

The Dunedin council approved a memorandum of understanding yesterday with the Christchurch City Council.

A joint working group could consider "a wide range of functions or services, such as joint procurement, laboratory services, plans for asset management, infrastructure planning and delivery, water safety, compliance and performance monitoring", a DCC report said.

Christchurch councillors are yet to consider the proposed partnership.

The Dunedin council also decided yesterday its preferred model to put in front of the public regarding delivery of water services was keeping it in-house.

Setting up a water company owned by the council would be presented as an alternative model for consideration.
