The upgrade of the Dunedin City Council building began in 2021 and has included roof replacement work, asbestos removal and lighting upgrades.
Council property services group manager Anna Nilsen provided a brief update at a meeting last week, confirming the council hoped the project would be finished by the end of 2025.
When the Otago Daily Times asked for more information on the project’s progression, a council spokesman said renovations were under way on the first floor.
The final phase of the project would create a more welcoming public space and improve civic amenities on level two, he said.
The building was more than 40 years old and most of the work and cost involved necessary maintenance and upgrades to deteriorating and ageing parts of it, the spokesman said.
"The roof membrane has been replaced, some parts of the structure and facade repaired, and the windows were at the end of their usable life and in need of replacement.
"Other essential work included asbestos removal and improving the safety and accessibility of the building to better meet the needs of the organisation.
"We’ve also upgraded the lighting and fire protection systems, and made the building more energy-efficient."
Work to renew the electrical and mechanical systems was planned for the future, but was not part of the existing project, the spokesman said.
