All-day carparks to go in revamp

Almost 40 all-day car parks will be scrapped from the Vogel St area as part of the redevelopment of Dunedin's warehouse precinct.

The Dunedin City Council announced the overhaul of the area's parking provisions yesterday in a move that would result in a reduction from 151 parking spaces to 145, and the number of all-day parks slashed from 75 to 37.

The changes would affect Vogel and Cumberland Sts from their intersections with Police St to Queens Gardens.

They follow consultation with residents and businesses, which were mostly positive about the move, council safety team leader Hjarne Poulsen said.

The short-term parks would contain a mix of authorised vehicles only, P5, P10, P30, P60 and P90 parks. Pay and display would not be introduced and unrestricted parking would be allowed from 6pm to 9am and on Sundays, he said.

Lease and long-term parks were also available nearby.

Most of the all-day parks would be on Cumberland St.

''It's mainly on the state highway because the state highway is the best place to have all-day parking,'' he said.

It was hoped work would start in May and be completed by the middle of the year.

''It's not huge work, so once it gets started it won't take long,'' he said.

''We will let businesses know when they are coming through and when they are going to do it.''

The council's intention was to make the area more vibrant and to increase activity.

''The parking changes are designed to make the area safer and more dynamic for residents and visitors, and to make it easier for people to get to local businesses,'' he said.
