A Dunedin radio presenter said she felt like a gazelle as she abseiled down the side of one of Dunedin's tallest buildings yesterday - that was, until she smashed into the side of the building part way down.

Nicky Rennie put aside her fear of heights yesterday and abseiled 30m down the side of Radio Otago House after being dared to do it by Moyle's Supervalue Supermarket in Green Island, in exchange for their putting $1000 towards her fundraising efforts for the Cancer Society Relay for Life.

And she took the plunge despite having already raised more than $5000 for the cause.

''I was cursing a little bit, but the money was too good to turn down.

''You've got to put yourself on the line to make yourself feel alive now and then.''

Moments before she leaned out over the side of the nine-storey building, she described feeling ''nervous as hell'' but said she hoped her daredevil effort would look inspiring to her daughter, who was watching from the car park.

On safely reaching the ground, the slightly rattled-looking radio announcer said she was proud of her achievement. She made a point of thanking those people who had helped her raise more than $6500 for her Relay for Life campaign.
