Daffodils, camellias, bonsai and floral art were among the nearly 500 entries to the Dunedin Horticultural Society's Spring Flower Show at Forbury Park Raceway on the weekend.

Society president Joy Morton said the show was in its 164th year and the standards of entries ''was pretty jolly high''.

The 55 floral art entries was an ''exceptional'' number, the most entries the category had for many years. The two-day show concluded yesterday.

Helen Warren, of Dunedin, won the Tui Shearer memorial trophy and the Annie Cable prize for floral art.

Alan Brown won the Sidney Gasper Memorial Trophy for his fire eyed daffodil.

Mrs Morton said the daffodil was ''the best, of the best, of the best'' and the perfect symmetry of the daffodil cup was a stand-out feature.

Mr Brown, of Waihola, said there was no secret to growing prize-winning daffodils and the flower was the result of ''hard work. The more work you do on your flowers, the more results you will get.''
