An elderly male cyclist is dead after being hit by a car on Brighton Rd this afternoon.
Dunedin police and the serious crash unit are still investigating the accident, acting Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.
A car, being driven by a man and carrying one passenger, collided with the cyclist about 2pm, but exact details of the crash were unavailable.
Police have been unable to identify the dead man because he was not carrying any identification with him, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
The man is thought to be about 70 years old. Police have yet to contact his next of kin, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
Brighton Rd was closed for almost four hours while the police investigation of the crash site was carried out.
Meanwhile, a one vehicle crash on the Southern Motorway near Fairfield at about 3.30pm today created traffic hold-ups for motorists.
Acting Snr Sgt Butterfield said police were investigating the female driver, who was the only occupant in the car at the time of the crash.
The woman was not injured in the crash.
Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor, Snr Sgt Butterfield said.
