More than 30 tabby cats and kittens are settling into their new Dunedin homes following a successful Tabby-A-Thon at SPCA Otago over the weekend.
The facility recently reached its cat capacity of about 70 felines, of which about 45 were tabbies.
So the grey, black and white pets were offered for adoption at half price on Saturday and Sunday.
SPCA Otago animal manager and inspector Grace Hepburn said it was a successful campaign, resulting in the adoption of about 12 tabby cats and 20 kittens.
A few people who visited the SPCA Otago premises for the Tabby-A-Thon also ended up adopting and taking home puppies to trial.
''You can't say no to those puppy faces, so it's been a successful weekend all round. Every single cage we had for cats and kittens was full before the weekend and we are really stoked to have seen it go so well,'' Ms Hepburn said.
Adult tabbies cost about $70 and kittens $80, which covered microchipping, desexing, vaccination, worming and flea treatments.
Ms Hepburn said since Christmas, adoptions had markedly decreased. It was the first time SPCA Otago had organised such an event, which could become an annual fixture, she said.
''We didn't know what to expect but the results have been really good, so we're thinking of doing it every year or, if numbers build up, maybe twice a year.''
The facility had strong support from Dunedin families and individuals, which was appreciated, she said.
During Easter weekend, all rabbits at SPCA Otago will be offered for $20 - half the normal adoption price.
