A petition calling for a new pedestrian crossing in Green Island, in Dunedin, has been signed by 538 people.
The petition was presented to the Dunedin City Council's infrastructure services committee yesterday by resident Sue Lloyd.
She told councillors frequent shoppers in the area were "very pleased" with the recent development of a new off-road parking area, but pedestrians crossing Main South Rd from the car park were at risk from traffic.
Her petition called for a new pedestrian crossing across the road, close to Jenkins St, the car park and a bus stop.
An attached note from SeniorNet Otago, which had an office in the area regularly attended by 230 members, also supported the petition.
In response, Cr Colin Weatherall said he had visited the area with council transportation staff after learning of the safety concerns.
Council representatives would meet theGreen Island Business Association in the next week to discuss solutions, including plans for a new pedestrian safety zone.
The council representatives would then report back to council, he said.
