Cremation cost could rise if hours extended

The cost of a loved one's final farewell could rise if changes are made to the Dunedin Crematorium's hours of operation, it has been claimed.

Hope and Sons managing director Michael Hope confirmed the crematorium's operating hours would be discussed at a meeting with Dunedin City Council staff later this month, following a recent complaint about a "rushed" service from a grieving member of the public.

However, he doubted demand existed for a change to a seven-day service, and warned additional costs could be passed on to families if a change went ahead.

"It might make funerals cost even more. We don't want to have to head down that track if we don't have to," he said.

Margaret Everett contacted the Otago Daily Times last month to criticise the "ridiculous" rules governing the crematorium, which was closed from 1.30pm on Saturday until Monday morning.

She said a recent farewell service for a relative, held on a Saturday, had felt "rushed".

"It was hurtful, insensitive and robs grieving people [of] precious time to say goodbye to their loved one."

Mr Hope said the complaint had prompted discussion and would be addressed at the next quarterly consultative board meeting - between funeral directors and council staff - at the end of the month.

However, there were about 20 deaths in Dunedin each week, of which only "three or four" handled by his company required the use of the crematorium, he said.

The facility had eight one-hour time slots available each weekday and four on Saturday, the last starting at 12.30pm.

"The majority of our funerals are Monday to Friday and just a small percentage on a Saturday. That's all factored off the day the person dies," he said.

The company's 21 employees already worked "a full roster", so extending the crematorium's hours to provide a full weekend service would mean employing additional staff, he said.

"We would have to change the whole structure of how we run our business."

Last month, council community and recreation services manager Mick Reece told the ODT the operating hours were the "recommendation and preference" of funeral directors, but could be reconsidered if they wished.
