While council transport delivery manager Josh von Pein said he did not think there was an imminent risk of it ''collapsing catastrophically'', it was something he was concerned about.
For that reason gates installed would be closed at night to protect against the possibility of the sort of crashes that occurred on the Otago Peninsula during heavy rain in 2015.
Mr von Pein said what was a historic slip on Brick Hill Rd showed some movement following heavy rain in July, and the council had been regularly monitoring the site.
The movement increased recently and, as a precaution, the council had decided to close the road overnight between 6pm and 6am while a design for permanent repairs was developed.
Mr von Pein said the slip appeared to be ''quite responsive to rainfall events''.
Gates would be closed at night when visibility was lower to help prevent a situation like the ``two-car slip'' on Highcliff Rd.
In a torrential downpour in 2015 a slip took a sizeable bite out of the peninsula road and two cars crashed into the hole.
Mr von Pein said the slip was not threatening dwellings, as there were no buildings below.
The council had a consultant looking at what engineering solution would fix the problem.
Repairs were expected to begin early next year.
