Crash after suspected cardiac arrest

A man remains in a critical condition after his car smashed into a parked car in Dunedin yesterday afternoon.

The driver of a Volkswagen Cross Polo crashed  into a parked car north of the Roslyn bridge  in Highgate yesterday afternoon.

The man was believed to be heading  south and  to have  experienced a medical event then hit  the rear of a parked vehicle in Highgate shortly before 1pm.

The road was closed for several hours, near the intersection of Oban St,  as officers from the police serious crash unit investigated.

A police spokeswoman said the man,  aged in his 60s, remained in a critical condition in Dunedin Hospital late last night.

Police and St John were unable to provide details of the medical incident but it is understood he  had a  cardiac arrest.

"CPR was administered at the scene by St John’s staff," the police spokeswoman said.

"He was taken to hospital in a critical condition."
