A Dunedin supermarket is exploring long-term solutions to vandalism after its large white wall became a popular canvas for taggers.

The Cumberland St wall of Countdown Dunedin Central was once white, but is now dotted with stylised tags in black, green and blue.

The vandalism started as a few large tags which appeared overnight last year, but more graffiti is added to the wall regularly.

Some vandals even seem to be climbing up the bus stop to make their mark near the top of the store.

A Countdown spokeswoman said it planned to remove the graffiti and repaint the wall, but its contractor faced some delays due to staffing challenges.

It had checked in with the contractor yesterday and Countdown was working with them to get the work completed as soon as possible.

Countdown was also looking at long-term solutions for the wall to ensure it stayed free of graffiti.

A council spokesman said it could provide advice on the best course of action and ways to deter graffiti in the future, however, property owners were responsible for the removal of graffiti on private property.
