Fire crews were called out to Castle St twice last night due to couches and rubbish being set alight in the street.
A Fire Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said the incidents happened at 10.45pm and again about 11.40pm.
It is unknown if the same people were involved in both incidents.
Campus Watch had alerted emergency services, and the University of Otago was aware, she said.
