Emergency services were called out to two couch fires in the Castle St area in North Dunedin early today.
A spokesman from Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they were called to a couch fire at a Castle St North address at 3.35am.
One crew from Willowbank Station attended and extinguished the fire with a hose reel, he said.
The call came from police, who were notified by campus watch.
The fire occurred between Dundas and Howe Sts.
Another call was made about 3.55am, and a crew from Willowbank Station extinguished another couch fire, this time at the rear of a Leith St property.
People at the address said they were unaware of anything untoward happening, only that they woke up to a burning couch on their driveway, he said.
Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were making inquiries about the fires, which were likely related because the properties where they occurred backed on to each other.
