A Corstorphine Rd resident is being hailed a hero after helping put out a fire following a serious car crash outside his home.
One person has been critically injured and another seriously hurt after a car struck a power pole in the Dunedin suburb of Corstophine last night.
Emergency services were called about 8.55pm to the crash scene, between Milburn and Sidey Sts. Two people were trapped in the car, one for nearly an hour.
Fenz East Otago assistant area commander Craig Geddes told the ODT today the man's actions to help extinguish the fire were heroic.
"The situation definitely had the potential to escalate if there was not intervention. His actions made a significant difference. They were heroic.''
A Fenz spokesman said the second person was freed about 9.45pm, and St John said both were transported to hospital by 10pm.
A bystander at the scene said it appeared the vehicle had crashed at high speed.
Power was off to the surrounding area after the crash.
A statement from police said the serious crash unit had been advised.
