Columba girl wins senior singing

Columba College pupil Miranda Waterworth won the senior section of the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing Cleveland Awards for solo singers in Dunedin yesterday.

Her performances of Apres un Reve, by Gabriel Faure, and The Silver Swan, by Helen Caskie, won the $500 first prize in the senior awards for year 11, 12 and 13 pupils.

Twenty-six secondary school pupils from Otago and Southland took part in the annual singing contest at Marama Hall yesterday.

The adjudicator was Flora Edwards, of Wellington.

Results were:
Newzats Cleveland Awards (years 11-13): Miranda Waterworth (teacher, Barbara Hendry), 1; Sam Madden (teacher, Patricia Scally-Richardson), 2; Victoria Martin (teacher, Ruth Reid), 3.

Commended: Sophie Morris (teacher, Patricia Payne), Harriet Richardson (teacher, Judith Borrick) and Anna Thomson (teacher, Barbara Hendry).

Newzats Cleveland Encouragement Awards (years 9-10): Sequoia Cunningham (teacher, Patricia Payne), 1; Mitchell Fulton (teacher, Gladys Hope), 2; Laura Aisi (teacher, Patricia Scally-Richardson), 3.
