Enjoying a rest from orientation activities in their new class room at Columba College are teacher Marion Hogg and year 3 pupils (from left) Henry Pratley, Lucas Choie, Cate Seaton, Leo Mundy, Harriet Murdoch, Ngara Stent and Stevie McKenzie (all 7).

They swapped their formal uniforms for school track suits on Tuesday to take part in a series of orientation activities to get used to the redeveloped junior school.

The redevelopment, which was done over the school holidays, will create new, open-plan learning spaces in the school’s existing heritage buildings.

The project inspired Mrs Hogg, with junior school staff, to create a programme to teach pupils through acts of doing.

Among the activities was an Amazing Race, in which year 0-6 pupils raced around the school in teams, learning something at each ‘‘pit stop’’.

The junior school redevelopment and refurbishment is one stage of a broader programme.

College principal Pauline Duthie declined to say how much it cost, but described the investment as ‘‘substantial’’.
