A St John officer speaks to a driver after firefighters forced open the driver's door to get him out of the damaged vehicle, which was involved in a collision in central Dunedin yesterday morning.

Police are investigating whether the two-car collision, at the intersection of Broadway, High St and Manse St, about 8.15am, was caused by a driver running a red light. Traffic was disrupted for at least half an hour.

Sergeant Ben Butterfield, of Dunedin, said one of the vehicles was driven by a Dunedin man in his 20s, who was taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters forced open the damaged driver's door to get him out.

There were no other occupants in the car, and no-one else was injured in the crash.

Sgt Butterfield said alcohol was not believed to have been a factor.

''Early indications are that one of the drivers may have run a red light. We are investigating further and have several witnesses to speak to, so it is too early to say whether or not charges will be laid,'' he said.

Both vehicles were ''moderately'' damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
