A Council investment of over $20,000 ensured Dunedin was represented in the "best way possible" in the latest edition of a globally recognised board game.

The official Dunedin edition of Monopoly was launched last week at the Dunedin Railway station by mascot Mr Monopoly, who was joined by Dunedin Mayor Jules Radich.

A Dunedin City Council spokesperson said the council’s economic development and destination marketing agency, Enterprise Dunedin, had supported Hasbro licenser Winning Moves’ release of the game.

This included a financial contribution of $22,500 from the agency’s marketing budget.

The spokesperson said the contribution secured a "prominent Dunedin brand on the product" and helped ensure accurate representation of the city’s attractions.

"The aim has been to ensure this limited-edition version of the game features and promotes Dunedin’s iconic attractions, tourism operators, education providers, towns and scenic locations, and that Dunedin is represented in the best possible way.

"We believe the result is something the city can be proud of."

The spokesperson said it was fantastic to see local experiences reflected in the game for visitors that they could take as a souvenir.

Enterprise Dunedin also supplied photographic and written content.
