The trained pharmacist-turned-restaurateur has relocated to Dunedin as he prepares to open two new ventures in the city, starting with an upmarket British-themed restaurant in time for the Rugby World Cup.
Mr Bhogal said the February 22 earthquake resulted in the loss of his Two Fat Indians restaurant in the Christchurch central business district, a restaurant in Merivale, and three shops at the University of Canterbury.
"We heard the Dunedin City Council wanted Christchurch businesses to move here ... While they may have been bagged for that, they have helped us a lot."
Mr Bhogal said he had fond memories of Dunedin, "after first coming here 18 years ago, to chase my wife, who was doing a PhD at Otago University".
Despite relocating to Dunedin, Mr Bhogal said he had not given up on the earthquake ravaged city and planned to open another restaurant in Halswell later this year.
His Dunedin venture, Madly British, in Princes St opposite the former chief post office, would serve traditional fare, such as Yorkshire pudding, spotted dick, and "of course, curry because that is their national dish".
The restaurant, which was due to open early next month, would employ the equivalent of 10 full-time staff, he said.
Keeping with the upmarket theme, it probably would have a cigar lounge and offer high tea and English beers.
The anticipated arrival of thousands of English rugby fans for their team's three games in the city was timely, but he was committed to Dunedin in the long term.
After the tournament, he also planned to open a Two Fat Indians restaurant in the city, he said.
