Any event in which gun-toting cowboys fill children "full of chocolate" has got to be a winner.

So it is no surprise the Cadbury Crunchie Gold Rush train was on a roll yesterday.

Popularity has prompted organisers of the annual trip on the Taieri Gorge train from Dunedin to Hindon and back, to look at putting on more train trips for the Dunedin Cadbury Chocolate Carnival next year.

Taieri Gorge Railway chief executive Murray Bond said the train was "packed" yesterday with 400 passengers, most of whom were children dressed as cowboys and cowgirls.

Mr Bond said the train had been fully booked for several weeks, and more than 1000 passengers from as far away as Southland and South Canterbury had been turned away during the past three weeks.

"We've had to turn away 600 people in the past week alone.

"It's fantastic. The response has been huge," he said.

Cadbury events co-ordinator Lee-Anne Anderson was also delighted with the response.

The ride could have been sold at least three times over, and the company was investigating ways to accommodate more passengers next year.

That could include more carriages or more train excursions during the week-long festival, she said.

"It's a great event and the kids absolutely love it.

"Making it available to more kids is the aim for next year."

This year, the trip included a hunt for Cadbury treasure and a hold-up.
