A chilli-eating champion will represent Otago at a national contest next month.

University of Otago student Harrison Walmsley-Bartlett, of Hastings, won the Dunedin heats of the New Zealand Chilli Eating Champs earlier this month.

The 19-year-old won by eating a range of the world's hottest chilli peppers - including the ghost chilli and the Carolina Reaper - without taking a drink, leaving the table or vomiting.

The vegan has accepted the invitation to enter the national final at the New Zealand Hot Sauce Festival in Auckland on May 20.

He was sourcing a range of chillies for training and was up for the pain because it was a ''no guts, no glory'' situation, he said.

''The glory of eating the most stupidly hot chillies - it's not much of a talent but you've got to work with what you've got.''
