More than 20 primary and pre-school children put their best foot forward at the Otago Settlers Museum yesterday.

The "Dancing makes you Smarter" workshop was developed to strengthen dance in the community and mark World Dance Day, on April 29, Dance Aotearoa New Zealand Dunedin development co-ordinator Kathryn Olcott said yesterday.

"Dance is good for everyone, for a variety of reasons.

"It's great for children, because they develop skills using their body and learn about spatial awareness, music, rhythm and memorising skills.

"It's good for older people, for exactly the same reasons."

The two-week programme included contemporary, hip hop, Indian, Irish and belly dancing styles, Mrs Olcott said.

"The Irish dancing and hip hop have probably been the most popular, but just about every workshop has been full."

The programme will culminate in a community dance concert at the Otago Settlers Museum, from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.
