Reports of an explosion and the smell of a chemical led firefighting crews to a building in Glasgow St, South Dunedin, yesterday evening.

Six fire trucks and a hazardous materials command unit were at the scene. There was no indication of a fire.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said sand was used in the building to absorb a small spill of the unknown chemical and a decontamination unit was set up as a precaution.

Dunedin City Senior Station Officer Simon Smith said firefighters wore high-level protective equipment and breathing apparatus.
