A fight for a good cause met a fight for life in Dunedin yesterday. Contenders in next Saturday's Southern Showdown charity boxing visited patients at the Otago Community Hospice in Dunedin.

Patient Edna Layther (87) was floored when two boxers, rather than nurses, delivered her dinner yesterday.

''Do you think you could smuggle some vodka in?'' she joked with contenders Suzanne Edington and Grant Williams.

The hospice is the nominated charity for this year's Southern Showdown.

''Coming here for a visit was an idea the contenders came up with,'' event promoter Doug Kamo said yesterday.

''There's a real connection for a lot of the contenders with the hospice.

''A few of them have lost grandparents and parents here.

''One contender lost her partner in the hospice.''
