In a show of support, two Rotary Clubs banded together for the 26th time on Saturday to provide citrus fruit for Dunedin charities.

About 50 Rotary Club of Dunedin members braved the cold on Saturday morning to pack nine tonnes of grapefruit, oranges and lemons sent down from the Rotary Club of Taradale, in Hawkes Bay.

Operation Citrus organiser Les Cleveland described it as a "wonderful project" which benefited organisations such as the Salvation Army and Women's Refuge.

"People use it for all sorts of things," he said.

One group in Wanaka made jam for people who received Meals on Wheels.

Fruit was picked by teams in Taradale, and taken to Dunedin, with any extra going to Wellington; then distributed to foodbanks, charitable societies and pensioner accommodation around the city and into Central Otago.

"It spreads so far," Mr Cleveland said.
