Crowds thronged the Dunedin Railway Station at the weekend for a last shot at finding a special something for under the tree.

The Otago Farmers Market hosted its yearly Christmas market on Saturday, which brought people in from all over Dunedin.

The market opened its gates at 7am, earlier than usual, and visitor numbers remained solid well into the late morning.

Twenty-year market stall veteran Janefield Peonies and Hydroponics was set up for the day.

Owner Rodger Whitson dusted off his rugged Santa suit from the wardrobe before showing up on Saturday and became the market’s unofficial Santa.

The get-up had become a yearly tradition.

"The crowd’s been good this year and everyone’s been having a great time ... Everything’s been very festive," he said.

Peonies were flying from the bucket and produce had been snapped up by punters all morning for the trio manning the stall.

Overall, the vibe had been good, and local shoppers could expect the stall to be back after Christmas, sans Santa suit, Mr Whitson said.
