St Peter Chanel School pupils swapped their "cosy'' beds for cardboard shelters on Friday night.

While most primary school pupils went home for the weekend at 3pm, those at the Green Island school spent the night at school living like some people in Timor-Leste.

Pupils in years 4, 5 and 6 took part in the Caritas Challenge, a nationwide event which encourages people to raise money by spending 24 hours living like those less fortunate.

After the school bell rang, the pupils busked outside Fresh Choice supermarket for money they would use to buy rice - the only food they would eat until 9am on Saturday morning.

They had a 20-litre container of water and had to walk to the school site to fill it up if it ran out.

Year 4 pupil Rebecca Ramsay said it was a "tough night''.

"I could not live like that.''

Rebecca said she was so tired the next day she went home and "collapsed'' on the couch.

"It was not like my soft, cosy bed,'' she said of the night at school.

"We were just thinking about people in Timor-Leste who don't have homes,'' Rebecca said.

Fellow pupil Christiana Jaquiery said it was "strange'' to sleep outside at school and the hardest part was trying to get to sleep.

The girls said they would like to take part in the challenge again next year.

"I'm glad that it's done,'' Rebecca said.
