Talks about a centralised emergency services hub in Dunedin are continuing, the Fire Service says.
Fire Service southern region Commander Stu Rooney confirmed this week he was in talks with various agencies, but declined to say with whom and how far talks had progressed.
The idea of a centralised emergency service hub in Dunedin was raised by Mr Rooney in December about the time of the news St John staff members were vacating the ambulance service's historic York Pl building while work was undertaken to make it earthquake-proof.
Dunedin's central fire station had been slated for strengthening for several years before Christchurch's earthquakes, but the extensive, and expensive, job has been put on the back burner since then.
Mr Rooney said the Christchurch earthquakes had raised the possibility of emergency and social services' working from a hub, and the question of whether doing something together was a better use of funds.
He said it would be at least several months before he could reveal anything further. A St John spokeswoman said St John had not been involved in any formal discussions or meetings on the matter thus far.
