Caution urged in wake of trailer thefts

Dunedin police are again appealing to trailer owners, after 13 trailers have been stolen since the start of September.

Those included three, two from Mosgiel, stolen in the past week.

Police recently urged trailer owners to be more security conscious after the number of trailers stolen since the start of the year moved past 20.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said it appeared semi-rural or isolated locations were being targeted.

He reminded owners there were some relatively simple and cost-effective crime prevention solutions, including ensuring trailers were secured and parked on private property.

Police recommended using a tow ball locking device, which cost about $30. They also encouraged owners to photograph their trailers to assist with identification.

He asked anyone with any information in relation to the thefts to contact Dunedin police on 471-4800 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
