A "freak" storm which left Rattray St, Dunedin, coated in a slippery white layer of hail created havoc for some motorists on the steep road yesterday evening.

Constable Robert Cole said a car crash at the Rattray St intersection was an accident caused by the unusual slippery road conditions.

The driver of a vehicle was unable to stop at the intersection and had lost control of his vehicle, smashing into the back of a passing car travelling down the steep street, Const Cole said.

"Cars were struggling to drive up here.

"The road was just coated all in white from that freak hail," he said.

The BMW slid through the intersection, hit the rear of another car, and had then ploughed into bushes on the opposite side of Rattray St.

The driver of the BMW and the two occupants in the rear-ended car were not injured in the crash, Const Cole said.
