Careys Bay Hotel evacuated

Firefighters spray water down the chimney of Carey’s Bay Historic Hotel  after a chimney fire left the building smoke-logged yesterday afternoon.

Appliances from Port Chalmers, Ravensbourne and Dunedin City attended the fire. Firefighters were called to the hotel about 3.30pm after the fire was reported by staff.

A Fire Service spokesman said the building was smoke-logged as a result of a "small" fire in the chimney.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and left the matter in the hands of the owner.

Former  owner John Kidston, whose daughter now runs the hotel, said it was expected the business would reopen today.

There was little damage to the interior of the building, "just lots of smoke", he said.

The hotel was evacuated after smoke  triggered the  alarms.
