Cordons have been lifted at Carey's Bay after army bomb disposal experts safely removed what was feared to be a World War II-era bomb fished out of Otago Harbour this morning.
The device was in fact an historic 25lb training round which the bomb squad members from Christchurch wrapped in protective fabric and removed from the scene.
The bomb, which is about half a metre long with fins on its back, was snagged in the fishermen's net about 3.2km northeast of Taiaroa Head and brought back to the wharf at Carey's Bay about 10am, police said.
An area 100m in every direction was evacuated and a traffic diversion put in place around part of Carey's Bay, until the bomb squad arrives.
