The riverside path next to the building has been closed and the barriers will affect access to the Archway Lecture Theatre.

Students and staff have been relocated to alternative buildings on campus.

Is was part of a broader redevelopment plan of the Food Science precinct, which would involve also strengthening the neighbouring Gregory Building, refurbishing and joining the two buildings by a first-storey link.

The university said, on its online bulletin board, the barriers were a safety precaution in the meantime, should an earthquake happen and masonry fall off the building.

Millions of dollars had been spent by the university, over several years, towards assessing its buildings for seismic risk.
