A Dunedin woman hit by falling glass from the former Chief Post Office, in Princes St, believes the vacant building should be cordoned off for safety reasons.

Marie Foreman was hit on the ankle by shards of glass that shattered on the footpath behind her on March 12, 2008.

She was not injured, but believed she only narrowly avoided being killed by a pane of glass that fell from the fourth floor.

Ms Foreman rang the Otago Daily Times after seeing yesterday's account of a near miss from falling glass for two young women walking on the footpath at the rear of the building in Bond St.

Four incidents involving falling glass are known to have occurred around the building since 2006.

The building is owned by South Canterbury Finance which has contracted Dunedin firm Octa Associates, since August, to keep it secure.

Octa director David Booth told the Otago Daily Times last night he was shocked to read of the latest incident.

Mr Booth said when his company took over, it employed a building company to "re-secure" the building to prevent people getting in.

This had included welding closed mesh grills on the back of the building, securing roller doors to the ground and blocking broken windows with plywood.

"But the thing that happens is that people . . . actually assault the building. They physically break their way and smash their way into the building. It's like war, is how I'd describe it."

Mr Booth said people got inside and threw things through windows.

"It's not by accident the glass falls out, and it absolutely scares the hell out of me that people are that mindless they want to go in there and do that sort of damage to the building and potentially injure people."

Mr Booth said all ground-level windows, broken or not, were in the process of being covered with plywood to keep people out.

Mr Booth asked that anyone seeing activity around the building contact the police.
