Butterfly house yoga class fly-away hit

Do you think you could hold a yoga pose with a butterfly on your nose?

A yoga class is being held in Otago Museum’s Tropical Forest, home to 1000 butterflies.

On Tuesday night, Hot Yoga Dunedin co-owners Donna Wikio and Lili Wyant  will lead a  class among the butterflies.

Ms Wikio said the hatha yoga class would focus on moving slowly through basic poses, including the butterfly pose.

The temperature in the three levels of the Tropical Forest ranges between 22degC and 35degC with 75% humidity.

But the one-hour class was "not all about the heat".

"It’s more about being with the butterflies and the cool experience."

Museum science engagement and living environments manager Samantha Botting said if people taking the yoga lesson wanted butterflies to land on them they should spray rosehip oil on their body.

More butterflies would be released in a "first flight" ceremony at the conclusion of the class.

Museum public engagement manager Rachel Cooper said the class was "overwhelmingly popular" and the 50 tickets had sold out by Thursday night.

The participants were a mix of men and woman, aged between early 20s and late 50s.

She expected another class would be held in the Tropical Forest.

The class was being held to support the interactive museum display "Well Balanced", which focused on strength and wellbeing.

"Yoga fits in perfectly."
