Bus driver unaware he was hitting things

A bus driver drove from Portobello to Andersons Bay unaware he had clipped a restaurant and phone box.

A police spokeswoman said they received a report of a bus hitting a phone box late on Tuesday night.

The bus kept moving and no injuries were reported.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said the 61-year-old bus driver clipped the Portobello Hotel and Bistro, as well as the telephone box across the road.

The incident occurred about 11.10pm.

The driver was located in Portsmouth Dr and was not aware that he had driven into the building or telephone box.

He was given an infringement notice for careless driving, Snr Sgt Bond said.

An Otago Regional Council spokesman would not be drawn on the employment status of the bus driver, saying it was an operational matter for the bus company.

The council did not have information about the cost of damage and said it would be an insurance matter for the bus company.

Spark corporate relations partner Samantha Smith said while the incident caused a small amount of cosmetic damage to the phone booth, it was operational and safe to use.

Spark was getting a quote for repairs, she said.
