The search has resumed today for a person who went missing at Dunedin's Brighton Beach yesterday.
Police and Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club members launched the search yesterday after a member of the public witnessed a person near the water’s edge, wearing all black clothing, about 10.20am.
Peter Dunn, of Dunedin, told the Otago Daily Times he rang the police after failing to see the person return from the water’s edge.
"I was about 200m away and I noticed them and I looked back and they were gone."
The only footprints in the sand led to the water, Mr Dunn said.
He was too far away to tell the gender of the person, but he believed they were wearing all black, loose fitting clothing.
Early attempts to find the person using an IRB were aborted because of rough conditions.
The Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter crew scanned the stretch of beach, about 200m south of the Brighton residential area, but failed to find the person.
The search resumed this afternoon, when tidal movements were expected to be favourable, and police said they were focusing on the Brighton Beach and Blackhead areas
Police are still appealing for any sightings or information regarding the missing person.
